imac fan making strange noise

imac fan making strange noise

Strange noise as in loud? Or strange noise as in grinding or squeaking? If it's just loud because it's running too fast try resetting the SMC and pram, if it's making other noises I"m afraid it might be a hardware failure. To reset the SMC Shut down the computer. Unplug the computer's power cord. Wait fifteen seconds. Attach the computer's power cord. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer. Resetting PRAM and NVRAM Shut down the computer. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4. Turn on the computer. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time. Release the keys.
iMac Fan Noise Fix | iMac HDD Fan Control
Reduce Fan Noise and Protect your Drive. Fixes iMac Fan Noise problem Stops the fan always running at full speed Allows HDD Fan to run at a speed related to Drive's temperature Does not need the Apple Temperature Sensor or Firmware No hardware modifications needed Protects Drive from Overheating Works with all HDD's & SSD's Have you replaced your iMac’s Hard Drive with a new HDD or a SSD and the fan has started running at full speed creating a lot of noise? HDD Fan Control controls the fan speed in relation to the drive's temperature, slows the fan down preventing the loud noise and keeps your drive safe from overheating. iMac HDD Fan Control does not require Apple’s temperature sensor or cable to obtain the drives temperature as it uses the S.M.A.R.T (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) protocol built into all drives, this means you no longer need the temperature sensor or cable for the fan to operate correctly.
SSD fan control
iMac users who tweak their systems using 3rd party hard disks or solid state disks, are often surprised by an unpleasant aftermath: an annoyingly noisy hard disk fan. Fan management in Apple systems relies on temperatures reported by the SMC system. The SMC collects data from external sensors or by reading the internal hard disk temperature in a proprietary manner. Sometimes reusing the external sensor is not possible or, as in more recent generations of iMacs, replacing the original hard disk breaks the system’s temperature monitoring. In both cases the SMC system tends to go into frenzy and drive you mad with a loud fan. SSD Fan Control puts you in control. It enables you to overrule the automatic fan control and manually configure the fan speed. The core of the system is a daemon that runs in the background and takes care of the fan management. Whenever the SMC system resets to its default, SSD Fan Control takes over again to make sure that your system remains quiet. Aside of this daemon, SSD Fan Control features a user-friendly application for monitoring and control.
